slavery

While thinking about the importance of the civil war and current day I was stuck. I personally couldn’t think of why the civil war really mattered in today’s society. Then I looked around. I looked at my friends, Teachers, Co-workers and that’s when it hit me. Thought slavery wasn’t a direct cause for the civil war; the outcome had a serious impact on it. If the south were to have won the war where would some of my friends and family be today be today? Would there still be slavery? Would woman have rights? These are all then things that hit me while thinking about the subject.
To start, the south believed that whites and blacks where not to interact with one another in a personal way. So I took a look at my family. We aren’t pure white. We have outer racial marriages. If the south were to have won the war, and were to have taken over, would mixed races exist? Probably not. I couldn’t imagine America without mixed races. My life probably wouldn’t be the same. I’m not sure any ones would be.
So after thinking of my family, I thought of my friends. If the north didn’t win, and slavery didn’t become illegal would the people that I’m so close to today be sitting in class next to me? NO! They wouldn’t even be at school. Blacks wouldn’t have right. It’s crazy to even think about. Half of my black friends wouldn’t even exist I’m sure.
Another idea I had was would women have rights? After the 14th and 15th amendments blacks had rights, could vote exc. Soon after the 19th amendment granted woman the right to vote. Well would anyone of pushed for that right if blacks didn’t get their rights first?
After thinking on the subject I realized that the civil war was truly important. My friends, and family wouldn’t be what they are today if the product of the war was different. Though many might disagree I feel very strongly that the succession of the south was a great move. Though it started a HUGE war, the out come was truly great.

i think your blog was good but i think it would be good if add like examples like who actually started rebelling against slavery?

There are some who have argued that slavery in the South would have ended on its own if it had been left alone. An interesting mental exercise would be to try to imagine race relations in the United States if slavery had ended by processes of industrialization and liberalization instead of violence. Maybe the United States would look more like the countries of Europe or the Caribbean where the specter of slavery and racism is not as prevalent. The United States had more slaves than any of those European countries, so maybe their peace is related to the relative size of the problem. In the Caribbean, the colonizing force did not settle in the same ways and slaves were part and parcel of the revolutions in those areas, so their more complete integration might stem from that. Could the US have done things differently?

I really could relate to your blog, since I have many friends who are black and I consider my family. It really makes you wonder how exactly different we'd be. I do think, though, that, like Mrs. G said, slavery possibly could've ended differently somehow, but in reality it is the Civil War that did it. I do have something to say about the blacks getting their rights first. Maybe women would've gotten more rights first and then the slaves, just because women were the same color as men and therefore were 'closer' to the American person, if that makes sense. Overall, job well done :)

i really like your blog because your blog made me think also because i have a lot of black friends that i might have never met if it wasnt for the civil war. i really like how you used what we learned in class to real life examples.

Wow, your blog is basically the one that I related to most of all. I feel the same way...I don't know where half of my friends would be if the South won the Civil War. I also agree with G-money that we should consider the possibility of a different outcome such as the abolishment of slavery through industrialization and liberation. But I wonder...maybe we wouldn't be here because in order for people to really change their social values and thier attitudes toward people who are different from them; we need something drastic to occur that would etch a deep mark within our mind and leave a permanent impression that will change the way we behave toward others. Basically, the Civil War accomplished just that...I don't think there were any other possible outcomes that would have ended slavery permanently than Civil War.

I think this is an interesting way to look at the civil war. Rather than focusing on a bunch of facts, and wars you actually saw what it did for the country, and how it affects your life today. Most people haven't said much about that. Without the war life as we know it would not exist.

Wow! Mariah I really enjoyed your blog. Your blog was one that made me think the most. While reading this i thought a lot of (What Ifs?}. I totally agree with what you are saying, and can definately relate. I have mixed brothers, sisters, cousins, and all, and I couldn't imagine my life with out them. Although, Civil War really put things to a definate end, I think slavery would have entually come to an end.

Mariah your blog was the first one i read and so far so good. Your blog acted as a teaser for my mind. As we both know we like to joke around and play about my father, but truth is if the south had won the outcome would have been different. If the outcome of the Civil war would have been different life would have been unimagineable. I honestly dont think that everyone would have settled to have slavery, just as gay rights are still protested today i believe that slavery would have been protested around the world also.

Good thing North won because if they didnt we would have to stop colorin you black and start coloring you white again...UGH!

loved it<3

Your blog was great. It was nice how you connection the history of slavery to our current world. Yeah, women will not have the rights to do what they want or do and i wouldn't have many black friends as Ido now. If slavery continued, the world will be totally different today.

I think you had a really good point. Things would be so different if there was still slavery. It might have been a long and bad war, but ending results were good. Today would still be segregated if it didnt happen.

I think your blog was really great! It was also very different from every one elses. You actually gave your opinion and not wat you learned in class. you put how u felt and that's what i like most about your blog. i guessni can agree, becuz i was always taught it was onley for slavery too, but mrs.G tells it all.

I like your blog it emphasizes of how the slavery was back then and how it has ended. Through out the years we seem to get along much better. The United States is also in an Economic Crisis. Will your blog help some of the people today who are having trouble with their lives?

hey
I really liked reading your blog because I never really took the time to think about what would have happened if another outcome came about. If the South had won, a lot of people wouldn't have the jobs they have now. Also, many of the inventions that African Americans thought up probably wouldn't be around today, like the air conditioner, IBM machine, and many medical surgeries! it's crazy to think about.

Mariah i loved your blog. i truly agree with what you have said. If the South had one the civil, life would be nowhere near the same as it is today. If the South had won the war, i wouldnt have known you(I known you since 8th grade..lol)or my other white friends. After reading your blog, I now wonder how life would be today if the outcome was that the South defeated the North.

loved your blog!!!
