While thinking about the importance of the civil war and current day I was stuck. I personally couldn’t think of why the civil war really mattered in today’s society. Then I looked around. I looked at my friends, Teachers, Co-workers and that’s when it hit me. Thought slavery wasn’t a direct cause for the civil war; the outcome had a serious impact on it. If the south were to have won the war where would some of my friends and family be today be today? Would there still be slavery? Would woman have rights? These are all then things that hit me while thinking about the subject.
To start, the south believed that whites and blacks where not to interact with one another in a personal way. So I took a look at my family. We aren’t pure white. We have outer racial marriages. If the south were to have won the war, and were to have taken over, would mixed races exist? Probably not. I couldn’t imagine America without mixed races. My life probably wouldn’t be the same. I’m not sure any ones would be.
So after thinking of my family, I thought of my friends. If the north didn’t win, and slavery didn’t become illegal would the people that I’m so close to today be sitting in class next to me? NO! They wouldn’t even be at school. Blacks wouldn’t have right. It’s crazy to even think about. Half of my black friends wouldn’t even exist I’m sure.
Another idea I had was would women have rights? After the 14th and 15th amendments blacks had rights, could vote exc. Soon after the 19th amendment granted woman the right to vote. Well would anyone of pushed for that right if blacks didn’t get their rights first?
After thinking on the subject I realized that the civil war was truly important. My friends, and family wouldn’t be what they are today if the product of the war was different. Though many might disagree I feel very strongly that the succession of the south was a great move. Though it started a HUGE war, the out come was truly great.
