Currently we are learning about life in the city, post western migration. City life was very diffrent from life out in the country. Many of these diffrences were because the ways of life were made by factory work, not farming. Also housing was diffrent, and many inventions started durning this time period.
To start, farming was no longer the means of living. People who lived in the city work in facctories, or mills. The work was hard, and the pay was little. This is because many were not sucessful in farming so they all had to move to the city. Also there were many immigrants who migrated to the cities. There for workers were easily found. Low wages and harsh conditions were common in this time period.
Living in the city was also very diffrent from life on the farm. Many lived in row houses and had no land at all. Many families were forced to live in one home due to high costs of rent.
Also this time period many new inventions came about. For one electric power. with this imvention every day life was changed. With this things such as electric tosters, washers, irons were invented.
In all City life was very important, and diffrent from life on the farms. from the way of living to the inventions used all were diffrent.

3-western migration
Currently we are learning about western migration and all of its ups and downs. Western migragtion took place before the Civil War. This time period was very hard and many people struggled a lot. Exspecailly Native Americans who were continiously kicked off of thier land.
Western Migration was when people who lived in the eastern coast traveld west for land, money, or freedom. Many traveld west for money. In 1849 there was a gold rush. Many people migrated to CA to capture all of this gold. Well it turned out, there wasn't as much as everyone thought. There also was a silver rush. But many did not find silver for they did not know what it looked like before being cleaned, so once agian it didn't hit they way every one expected.
Many also moved west and became homesteaders. They bought plots of land for so much money, and had to farm and live on it for five years. After that time period, it was thiers to keep. The problem here was the plots of land often wasn't enough for farmers to feed their family and make a profit. so many familys would have to team up and work together. Also the west was very dry and hard to farm.
Moving west was also hard because of Native Americans. They often would attack migraters along the way. Native Americans were moved out of their land and forced on to other land that the goverment allowed them to have. This made them very mad. Also there are many mountians, rivers, deserts, and along the western way. This made it hard for people to migrate west.
Western Migration was not very easy. Land conditions were harsh and dry. Money was tight, and hard to find. Also there were many natives that didn't like western settlers.

We are learning about reconstruction. Reconstruction was basically the rebuilding of the south after the Civil War. Post Civil War was very hard for both the North and the South. The North had to pay for and repair the South after the damage that was done. Also they had to deal with immigration of freed black slaves that wanted to live up north. In the south, everything was destroyed. Blacks were free but had no money. Former confederates had no rights, land, or money. Reconstruction was the end of slavery, but the beginning of a long journey for blacks, and former confederates.
With the end of the Civil war, Blacks now were free. Slavery was outlawed, and blacks thought it would be better. But little did they know it was just the start of a whole new hard chapter in their lives. Whites in the North did not want slavery. But they did not want blacks to live in their neighborhoods also. Segregation was mandatory, and blacks did not get treated as fair as whites. Also up north blacks had to fight with immigrants for jobs and housing. In the south blacks had curfews, and labor contracts. They also had to deal with KKK and white Camellia. There were riots and other violent movements geared toward blacks from whites. Blacks were hung, beaten, or treated very badly by racist people. Schools were burnt, just so that blacks couldn’t get an education. That’s how bad it was. Some even say it was worse than slavery.
Former confederates were also treated very badly. They had NO rights. NO money. NO land. They were removed from congress, and couldn’t vote. They were not considered citizens. Actually blacks had more rights than former confederates. That’s what caused a big tension between the two. In order for a southern to be pardoned they had to take an oath to the U.S. 13000 pardons were granted.
The 13th amendment abolished slavery; the 15th gave blacks the right to vote. But not confederates! The 15th amendment states that no state can take away some ones right to vote based on color, race ext. But if confederates weren’t considered citizens, they couldn’t vote.
I agree but disagree with how reconstruction was handled. Yes I think that blacks should be allowed to be citizens and vote. But former confederates should be allowed to also. Sure I think that it should be a little hard for former confederates to become citizen. They did rebel against their own country. But with the same aspect, they are still a part of the U.S. As long as they are willing to follow the new rules, they should be granted citizenship.

slavery
While thinking about the importance of the civil war and current day I was stuck. I personally couldn’t think of why the civil war really mattered in today’s society. Then I looked around. I looked at my friends, Teachers, Co-workers and that’s when it hit me. Thought slavery wasn’t a direct cause for the civil war; the outcome had a serious impact on it. If the south were to have won the war where would some of my friends and family be today be today? Would there still be slavery? Would woman have rights? These are all then things that hit me while thinking about the subject.
To start, the south believed that whites and blacks where not to interact with one another in a personal way. So I took a look at my family. We aren’t pure white. We have outer racial marriages. If the south were to have won the war, and were to have taken over, would mixed races exist? Probably not. I couldn’t imagine America without mixed races. My life probably wouldn’t be the same. I’m not sure any ones would be.
So after thinking of my family, I thought of my friends. If the north didn’t win, and slavery didn’t become illegal would the people that I’m so close to today be sitting in class next to me? NO! They wouldn’t even be at school. Blacks wouldn’t have right. It’s crazy to even think about. Half of my black friends wouldn’t even exist I’m sure.
Another idea I had was would women have rights? After the 14th and 15th amendments blacks had rights, could vote exc. Soon after the 19th amendment granted woman the right to vote. Well would anyone of pushed for that right if blacks didn’t get their rights first?
After thinking on the subject I realized that the civil war was truly important. My friends, and family wouldn’t be what they are today if the product of the war was different. Though many might disagree I feel very strongly that the succession of the south was a great move. Though it started a HUGE war, the out come was truly great.
